Introductions…

Welcome to MAUA Skin: A celebration of Natural skincare!

What is MAUA?

I have started this blog to share my recipes, my knowledge and my passion for natural skincare. I don’t think natural skincare needs to be complicated or difficult. I think there is a lot of satisfaction in creating and using your own products especially when you know everything that went into the products!

My name is Mushana and I have very sensitive oily skin. I have been creating my own natural skincare formulations for the last 10 years. I was taught the basics from my mother and grandmother. At university I studied biology and I use that scientific understanding to inform all of my skincare formulations. MAUA means flower in Swahili and I chose this name for my blog because its a great metaphor for nature’s ability to fully nourish and protect our skin.

I’ll also be making video tutorials on Youtube and sharing tips via Instagram.

I’m so excited for you to join me on this journey!

#BeYOUtiful

Blessings & may your skin be nourished and moisturised always!

Fruity Mango Body Butter Tutorial

Its spring so I decided to create a fruity mango body butter. This is a rich, creamy and moisturising body butter – great for sensitive skin and wonderful to get your skin ready for spring/summer!

Here are just a few of the benefits of Mango butter:

  • Skin Soothing properties
  • Deeply Moisturising
  • Provides Natural UV protection
  • Powerful Anti-oxidant
  • Strong Anti-inflammatory properties
  • Promotes Healing
  • Non-greasy

Here’s what you’ll need:

(I use a cream base because this gives my body butter an extra moisturising effect. This cream has its own natural blend as well as emulsifiers and preservatives to keep the mixture stable.)

This recipe consists of 2 main parts: the moisturising cream base & an oil blend.

Oil blend:

  1. Melt the cocoa butter using a double boiler (this can take a while so do this first)
  2. Once the cocoa butter has melted remove the cocoa butter from the double boiler
  3. Add the mango butter and coconut oil
  4. Mix and blend the oils until they are well combined.
  5. Add the vitamin E oil and jojoba oil

Moisturising cream base:

  1. Combine the cream base and aloe vera gel until it is well blended.

Combine the cream base & Oil Blend:

  1. Add 1/3 of the oil blead at a time to the cream base
  2. Mix thoroughly before adding more of the oil mixture.

Fill containers:

  1. Add the cream to clean and dry cosmetics containers.

This step can get a little messy but thats part of the fun! Be sure to reuse old, washed and dry containers where possible. Its safe to use PET plastic containers, or glass jars. Be sure not to fill containers that contained irritants or toxic materials such as bleach jars, washing powder dispensers or strong cleaning materials.

This recipe makes 1litre of body butter, so use half measures for 500ml.

This is a great recipe for dry sensitive skin, and a great way to get your skin ready for spring/summer after the sunless months!

Evening Natural Skincare Routine

My secret to flawless glowing skin! I would say doing this simple 2 step daily routine  is the MOST important thing I do for my skin and keeps my skin hydrated and nourished overnight!

It’s a very simple 2-step process.

Step 1 – Coconut cleansing.

There are soooo many benefits of coconut oil, its antibacterial, antiinflammatory, nutritious to name a few.

(If you want to know more about why coconut oil is so good for you here is a video that I think gives you the full list 🙂 )

  1. Use cold pressed virgin coconut oil and wipe it all over your face with a cotton swap or face cloth.
  2. This is safe to use around the eyes, but try to avoid rubbing oil into your open eyes. **if you are wearing make up repeat this step until there is no makeup left on your face – you might need a few cotton swabs though!**
  3. Try to massage the skin as you smear the coconut oil which promotes circulation. This will bring blood to the skin surface which nourishes it from within.
  4. Wipe off excess coconut oil, leaving a very thin layer on the skin.

Step 2 – Aloe vera moisture mask

Aloe vera is so moisturising, it bathes your skin in moisture, vitamins and soothes any irritation!

  1. Use natural aloe vera gel and massage into the skin like you would with a moisturiser.
  2. Wait 5 mins while the aloe vera gel dries.

That’s it! Your skin is now cleansed, nourished and moisturised.

The oil and Aloe Vera gel will create a soft glowing mask that clings to your face & keeps your skin hydrated and nourished while you sleep.

FYI- your skin will look shiny at this stage, don’t be put off! As the oil and Aloe Vera gel are absorbed the shininess will fade.

  • The next morning your skin will feel AMAZING, soft, supple and hydrated.
  • All you need to do is wash and moisturise your face.
